The properties of coral

Red coral (Corallium rubrum) grows in the sea and only in clear, unpolluted waters of low tidal amplitude.

It is an Octocoral belonging to the Coralliidae family, and is commonly found in the Mediterranean and the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. What is generally termed coral is simply a calcium carbonate skeleton secreted by tiny organisms which allows them to live in vast aggregated colonies and to eventually form atolls and reefs.

Regarding the composition of coral, it has a remarkably high calcium content (higher than 40%); there is also a great amount of oligominerals (74 trace elements). Coral, rich in calcium, also contains the following minerals in significant quantities: magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, sulphur and silicon. It is useful to note that there are no traces of heavy metals.

The benefits of using coral in cosmetology are mainly physical and tied to the properties of the coral dust itself. When micronised it is used as a filler or scrub, a superior alternative to exfoliants such as polyethene microbeads.

Pulverised coral has a gentle exfoliating action on the skin. It delicately removes impurities, dead skin cells, make-up and other cosmetic residues. It enables the skin to absorb the active substances in our creams more efficiently, maximising their efficacy.

Coral stimulates microcirculation and the skin’s renewal processes, preparing it for further beauty treatments. It leaves behind a lightly protective veil and offers deep hydration.

Coral dust can also be used to absorb excess sebum from oily skins, or as a skin-lightening agent and functional substance in delivering traces of important minerals, thus favouring epidermal homeostasis.

Thanks to its high mineral content, which includes magnesium, iron and calcium, coral effectively slows down the ageing process.

In fact these minerals favour the transmission of nerve impulses, the absorption of oxygen,  and the activation of a number of enzymes that are necessary for synthesizing proteins, all of which are fundamental steps in maintaining a youthful and healthy complexion.

Furthermore, the minerals that coral naturally contains leave a visible effect after use: iron, calcium and magnesium remineralise and rejuvenate the skin.
